Johnson's work questions the materiality and manipulation of paint, as well as figure-ground relationships. These abstract, process-based works challenge the perception one has to differentiate between the divisions of space within a painting.

A vital part in expressing figure-ground relationships in Johnson's work is through formal qualities such as line, colour, textures and transparencies as well as an exploration of materials. Paying close attention to movement, and how movement affects the marks that are created in a work is paramount to the process.

The visual aesthetic within Johnson's work relies on subtleties in line and layering.
